British International School in Ukraine: the path to Cambridge and Oxford

Thanks to the high-quality educational system and internationally recognized qualifications IGCSE and A Levels, the school provides an opportunity to enter the best universities in the world and expand the horizons of the future.
Today, more and more Ukrainian families are considering the possibility of educating their children abroad, in particular at British universities. This contributes to the growth of interest in international educational programs in Ukraine, which combine deep knowledge, an innovative approach and compliance with international standards. In the selection process, it is important to find a system that provides not only academic training, but also forms skills and values that remain relevant in a globalized world.
Why British education?
The British education system has long established itself as one of the most successful in the world. According to the QS World University Rankings 2025, four British universities are among the top ten: Imperial College London (2nd place), University of Oxford (3rd place), University of Cambridge (5th place) and University College London (9th place). This result confirms the leading role of British education in the international arena.

In addition, according to the HEPI Soft Power Index, as of October 2024, 58 current world leaders studied at British universities, leading 52 countries around the world. This indicates not only the high quality of this system, but also its impact on the education of future leaders. The educational model is built on a solid academic foundation, development of thinking, personalized learning and acquisition of life skills.
And most importantly, you can get an education according to British standards in your own country. The British International School in Ukraine (The British International School, Ukraine / BISU) offers a thorough Cambridge Pathway curriculum for children from 3 to 18 years old and operates in Kyiv and Dnipro. Here, children receive prestigious international qualifications IGCSE and A Level, which are recognized by leading universities in the world.
Since its founding in 1997, BISU has remained a flagship of international education in Ukraine. The school was the first to introduce the British education standard in the country and received the status of an accredited Cambridge examination center. BISU’s approach is based on British values, which laid the foundations of the traditions of such legendary institutions as Oxford and Cambridge.
What is IGCSE and why is it important?
A key milestone in BISU’s educational trajectory is the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) programme, which lasts two years and covers students aged 14-16. The programme is recognised worldwide and is a mandatory component on the path to more advanced study. BISU students start IGCSE in Year 10 (UK system) and take the final Cambridge exams in Year 11 (UK system).

Within the framework of IGCSE, BISU offers compulsory subjects, including: English language, English literature, international mathematics and combined natural sciences – chemistry, physics, biology. In addition, students can choose additional disciplines, such as economics, business, computer science, history, geography or foreign languages, in particular French. It is recommended to choose eight subjects to achieve academic balance. At the same time, BISU implements a flexible approach to creating a personal curriculum, taking into account the individual characteristics of each student.
Obtaining an IGCSE certificate is more than passing exams. It is a transformative experience that reveals the student’s potential, builds self-confidence and provides quality preparation for the next level – the A Level program. This qualification is a full-fledged international diploma of basic secondary education, which can even be the basis for a career start abroad.
A Level: preparation for university
The next link in the system is A Level (from the English “advanced qualifications” — abbreviated “A Level”) — a two-year program of in-depth study of basic subjects for senior students (16–18 years old), grades 12-13 (Years 12-13) according to the international system. It is this program that prepares graduates for entry to the most prestigious universities in the world without additional exams. A Level is recognized by more than 1,400 universities in more than 160 countries, including Oxford, Cambridge, Stanford, the legendary Ivy League universities and top universities in Europe, Asia and Australia.
The program involves in-depth study of three or four subjects – usually three subjects are the minimum required for entry to most universities. Students choose subjects according to their interests or future specialization. At BISU we offer core subjects: English, mathematics, natural sciences (biology, chemistry or physics). As well as elective subjects: business, economics, computer science, history, geography.
The program is considered to be in-depth and intensive, and universities and employers value the A Level qualification for the high level of preparation of graduates. This diploma provides a wide range of international career opportunities.
BISU International Teachers
BISU is proud of its international team of teachers – these are teachers from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, for whom English is their native language. All teachers have significant experience and are constantly improving their qualifications by participating in professional development programs. Lessons take place live, directly in the classroom, which ensures effective interaction between students and teachers.
Today, BISU in Kyiv has the largest team of foreign teachers physically working in the country. And BISU in Dnipro is introducing an innovative hybrid learning format, combining high-quality online and offline teaching.
In addition, the school is the only member of the Council of British International Schools (COBIS) in Ukraine. This means that BISU fully complies with the high British standards of education, and students receive the same education as children in the best private schools in the UK.
Global Opportunities
BISU offers a multifaceted IGCSE and A Level education. Partnerships with reputable organizations such as the Global School Alliance, Global Social Leaders, COBIS and schools around the world open up new horizons for BISU students. Thanks to this, children are constantly involved in influential international projects and initiatives dedicated to environmental protection, sustainable development and climate change. They learn to communicate confidently with peers from different countries, solve complex problems and work effectively in multicultural teams.

Participation in such programs develops social responsibility, empathy, tolerance and intercultural understanding – values that are the foundation of a British education.
As an example, in the winter, IGCSE and A Level students visited Prague, where they took part in the COBIS Model UN conference. The event brought together almost 200 participants from 20 leading European schools to discuss global challenges. Representing over 100 countries, BISU students, together with their peers from other schools, improved their diplomatic and public speaking skills in the international arena.
At the British International School, children not only participate in such events, but also win prizes and distinctions in global competitions and projects, which confirms their active position and mature thinking.
Today, more than 1,000 BISU graduates study at leading universities in the world or build careers in different countries. Among them are King’s College London, Imperial College London, D’Overbroeck’s College in Oxford, University of Manchester, London School of Economics and Political Science, University of Warsaw, University of Queensland, University of Vienna, Mannheim University and many others.

BISU is an important center of international education in Ukraine, which for over 25 years has been cultivating a generation of knowledgeable, responsible, competitive global citizens ready to change the world for the better.
