1. What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a lost tooth. A crown is then attached to it to restore the aesthetics and function of the tooth.
2. How does the implantation process work?
The main stages of implantation are as follows:
- consultation and diagnostics (X-ray, CT scan, examination);
- surgical installation of the implant;
- the period of engraftment (from 3 to 6 months);
- installation of the abutment and crown.
Sometimes it is possible to place an implant and a temporary crown in one day – this is called one-stage implantation.
3. Who is suitable for implantation?
Implantation is possible if:
- you have sufficient bone tissue or are ready to increase it;
- you do not have serious contraindications (uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, etc.);
- you do not smoke or are ready to temporarily quit smoking.
Such contraindications should be discussed with your doctor to avoid complications and minimize the risk of the implant not taking root. By the way, we described the reasons why implants do not take root in 1-2% of cases in our article.
4. Is implantation painful?
The procedure is performed under anesthesia. In the postoperative period, there may be minor swelling or discomfort, which is easily relieved with medication.
5. How long do implants last?
With proper hygiene and regular visits to the dentist, an implant can last 15–20 years or more.
6. What is the cost of implantation?
The price depends on the following factors:
- type of implant (manufacturer, material),
- complexity of the specific case,
- need for additional procedures (sinus lift, bone grafting).
